So the only explanation for this is that Avast Anti-Virus For Mac is substituting my certificates for its own. What’s worse is that it expired around the time I left for my trip, which is why I was getting the pop ups in the first place.
hi, firefox has always used it's 'own' certificate store on all platforms, so this is to be expected. since root certificates are an extremely sensitive area (which would allow an attacker to 'take over' the secure web for affected trust stores), a little bit of 'competition' and independent implementations are beneficial to the health of the web in my view.avast would have to insert its certificate into the firefox trusted root ca store for this to work without any issues like the error message you are seeing.
Using Mozilla Mail, I receive 'Mail Shield Security Exclusion' pop-up from Avast when attempting to access e-mail via POP. The pop-up goes on to state that certificate has expired (like within the last 24 hours it would seems) but when I view the certificate it actually expired 2016-12-09 (issued by Symantec Class 3 Secure Server). Avast shields untrusted certificates with a certificate issued by a different issuer, called 'avast! Web/Mail Shield Untrusted Root '. As long as this issuer stays untrusted, there is still a security warning when a HTTPS connection with an untrusted certificate is accessed. If you use Avast anti-virus software, you may see an error message about an invalid security certificate when you're setting up a google. Click Mail Shield's Customize button to display the SSL Scanning window. Go to the Certificate Servers panel. Invalid Security Certificate Errors.
Security Certificate Has Expired Or Not Valid
Avast for mac error code 7005. Check out why the site is untrusted and click 'Technical Details' to expand this section. If the certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided (sec_error_unknown_issuer) then see if you can install this intermediate certificate from another source.
You can retrieve the certificate and check details like who issued certificates and expiration dates of certificates.
- Click the link at the bottom of the error page: 'I Understand the Risks'
Let Firefox retrieve the certificate: 'Add Exception' -> 'Get Certificate'.
- Click the 'View..' button and inspect the certificate and check who is the issuer of the certificate.

- Note that some firewalls monitor (secure) connections and that programs like Sendori or FiddlerRoot can intercept connections and send their own certificate instead of the website's certificate.
- Note that it is not recommended to add a permanent exception in cases like this, so only use it to inspect the certificate.
